The service

Kids Cut: haircuts for children 12 and under

Haircuts for children 12 and under.

Your barber starts by asking both of you what you want. How short on the sides, how much comes off the top, whether the fade sits high or low, and whether a design is going in at the end. Nothing starts until everyone at the chair agrees.

Set aside about 30 minutes for a Kids Cut. That covers the talk at the start, the cut itself, the line-up, and a brush-down before your child gets out of the chair.

  • A fade, taper, buzz cut, scissor cut, or a longer shape, whichever suits the hair.
  • A line-up around the front hairline and the temples to finish.
  • A hair design cut in freehand, on request.
  • A brush-down and a look in the mirror before you leave.

Children 13 and over book the Signature Cut instead: the same fade, taper, or scissor cut, finished with a razor line-up.

First visits

First haircuts and nervous kids

A first haircut is a big moment, and it does not always go to plan. Tell us it is the first one when you book so your barber knows before you sit down.

Our barbers work at the child's pace on a first haircut, and a parent can stay right at the chair. If your child is small enough that sitting still in a barber chair is the hard part, say so when you arrive and your barber will work out the easiest way to get the cut done.

Tell us before the cut if your child dislikes the clipper sound. We can start with scissors instead. Scissors are quieter, and most kids settle once they can see what is actually happening.

Headphones, a tablet, or a favorite toy all help. So does going second: let your child watch somebody else get a full cut from the waiting bench before it is their turn.

The cuts

Fades, line-ups, and hair designs kids ask for

Kids most often ask for a fade, a line-up, or a hair design on the side.

A fade takes the sides down gradually, and the barber sets it high, mid, or low depending on how much contrast you want. A taper keeps more length through the sides and just tidies the neckline. A buzz cut is one guard all over, and it is the easiest cut to keep neat between visits.

The line-up is the last step. The barber squares off the front hairline and the temples so the cut still reads sharp in a school photo two weeks later.

Hair designs go in freehand once the fade is finished. Bring a photo if your child has something specific in mind, and keep it bold: broad shapes hold their edge far longer than fine detail as the hair grows back.

Curly and coily hair is cut dry so the barber can see the curl pattern before anything comes off. Braid design and styling for kids is booked by request, so mention it when you book. More on how we handle every hair type is on the curly and textured hair page.

Timing

The easiest times to book with a child

Morning appointments are the calmest time to bring a young child.

The shop is quieter early, the wait is shorter, and most kids have more patience before lunch than after it. We are open Mon-Sat 9AM-6PM and Sun 9AM-5PM.

After school on weekdays and Saturday mornings are the busiest windows for kids' cuts, so book those ahead. Walk-ins are welcome when a chair opens up, but a booked time is the shortest wait when you have a child with you.

Booking runs through SQUIRE. Pick the Kids Cut, pick a time, and you are done - book online here.

Before you come in

What parents should know before the chair

None of this is required. It just makes the half hour easier on everybody.

  • Book one chair per child. Two kids means two back-to-back times, not one slot.
  • Bring a photo if you have one. It is the fastest way to show the shape you want.
  • Decide about a hair design before the cut starts, not halfway through the fade.
  • Come with clean, dry hair when you can.
  • Tell the barber about cowlicks, scars, or a spot your child does not like touched.
  • Guards, clippers, and shears are cleaned between clients.

You are welcome to stay at the chair for the whole cut. Some kids do better with a parent in the mirror and some do better once the parent sits down. You already know which one yours is.

Walk-ins, hours, and where to find us are answered on the homepage FAQ.
