What the Hot Towel Shave and facial work includes
Hot towel shave and facial grooming.
This is a shave built around heat and patience. Towels open the skin, the lather stays warm, and the razor moves in passes instead of one hard scrape. The grooming that follows is the part you notice the next day: skin that is calm rather than raw, and lines along the jaw and neck drawn on purpose.
- Hot towels before the razor, a cool towel after
- Pre-shave oil and a brush-worked lather
- A straight razor shave in passes, with the grain first
- Neck and jaw lines finished by hand
- A finishing balm to settle the skin
- Waxing on request
Want the shave inside a longer sitting? The VIP Experience puts a haircut, a men's facial, a head massage, and a shampoo around the same razor work.
Step by step
How a hot towel straight razor shave works
Every step in a barber shave has a job. Skipping one is what turns a shave into razor burn two hours later.
- Hot towel. Softens the beard and opens the pores.
- Pre-shave oil. Goes on under the lather so the blade glides.
- Lather. Brushed in against the grain to lift the hair off the skin.
- First pass. With the grain, skin held taut.
- Second pass. Fresh lather, then across the grain for the closer finish.
- Cool towel. Closes the pores and clears the last of the lather.
- Balm. Goes on last so the skin settles instead of stinging.
Your barber reads the grain before the first pass, because beard hair does not grow one direction. That is why the neck takes a different angle than the cheek, and why a shave that follows the grain leaves fewer ingrown hairs behind.
Which service
Straight razor shave or beard trim: which to book
The short version: book the shave when you want the beard off, and the beard trim when you want it shaped.
The Hot Towel Shave takes the face down to clean skin. If you are keeping the beard and only want the length and the edges tidied, book the Signature Cut and Beard Trim instead. That service holds your shape and finishes with the same hot towel and a razor line-up.
Plenty of clients pair a shave with a fresh Signature Cut on the same visit. Either way, say what you want before the razor comes out. We would rather rework the plan in the chair than take off a beard you meant to keep.
More than the face
Head shaves and facial grooming
A head shave gets the same treatment as a face shave: hot towels, warm lather, a straight razor over the scalp, then a cool towel and balm. It reaches the crown and the back of the neck, which is where shaving blind at home leaves patches.
Waxing is booked alongside the shave where you want a clean edge. Ask for it when you book so your barber holds the time.
Before and after
Skin prep and aftercare
Come in with a day or two of growth. A straight razor needs something to catch, so shaving at home on the morning of your appointment only makes the blade work harder over bare skin.
Tell your barber if your skin runs sensitive or if you get ingrown hairs along the neck. Pressure, the number of passes, and the direction of the second pass all change with that one sentence.
Afterwards, leave the skin alone for the day. Skip aftershave with alcohol, skip the steam room, and use a plain moisturizer if the face feels tight.
Timing
How long a hot towel shave takes
Set aside about 45 minutes for the Hot Towel Shave. Most of that is towels, lather, and finishing, not the blade. A head shave runs about the same.
A haircut and a shave together takes roughly an hour and a half, so pick both services when you reserve the chair rather than adding the shave once you sit down. The service you choose sets the length of the slot.
